Tentang Kesabaran Dalam Berputar-putar

Akhir-akhir ini saya disibukkan dengan beberapa hal - proyek menulis, urusan rumah tangga dan kantor, beberapa proyek akan datang, dan naskah novel baru.

Jujur, naskah yang sedang saya garap ini adalah salah satu yang terasa paling sulit dari naskah-naskah sulit sebelumnya. Beberapa naskah yang saya kerjakan terasa cukup alami saat ditulis, seperti Remember When, Ai, Tomodachi. Untuk naskah Unbelievable, riset bullying, peer pressure dan fashion cukup ngejelimet dan perlu pendalaman agar terasa wajar, untuk naskah Melbourne: Rewind meskipun terasa natural, saya tetap merasa perlu menggali lebih dalam hubungan antar karakter, terutama dari segi dialog dan chemistry. Untuk Unforgettable, sulit sekali mendalami proses dan deskripsi wine, juga interaksi kedua karakternya.

Sedangkan naskah ini membuat saya banyak berpikir; karena saya tidak memahami satu pun aspek baru yang ditulis. Musik. Hubungan kakak-adik perempuan. Cowok playboy yang misterius. Ah, rasanya sangat sulit dalam menuliskannya secara wajar. Namun, saya percaya proses tersebut dapat dijalankan secara bertahap.

Banyak orang berkata, menulis tidak perlu buru-buru. Saya setuju. Semakin terburu-buru, semakin tidak maksimal. Semakin tergesa, semakin kita terobsesi pada target tak kasat mata di hadapan kita. Dan hasilnya, kita fokus pada ending, bukan pada kenikmatan menulis, revisi yang optimal, bahkan bukan pada karakter.

Tentu saja, setiap penulis mungkin merasa ingin buru-buru mencapai garis akhir. Ingin rasanya cepat melipat laptop dan mengirimkan hasil jadi ke penerbit. Ingin segera melihat buku terbit. Tetapi, inilah rasa yang menurut saya perlu diredam.

So I'm going to take it easy. Saya akan mengikuti prosesnya.

Ada juga yang berkata, berjalan-jalanlah dalam kekosongan pikiranmu. Something will come. It will definitely come. Jadi, bagi teman-teman yang stuck dan mengalami writer's block, atau seperti saya sering berputar-putar dengan kanvas kosong yang tak kunjung berisi, bersabarlah. Kita pasti akan melaluinya.

Tentang naskah baru: Happily Ever After

Saatnya saya berbagi spoiler tentang novel baru yang akan terbit setelah Tomodachi. Spoiler ini saya share dengan teman-teman yang hadir di event Tomodachi 5 Juli lalu, plus pembacaan bab dalam novelnya :-)

Naskah ini saya tulis di awal tahun 2014, selama kurang lebih 4 bulan. Genrenya remaja, tentang dua orang murid SMA yang bertemu karena suatu keadaan yang sebenarnya tidak menguntungkan, tetapi keadaan tersebut justru membuat mereka dekat.

Judul tentatifnya Happily Ever After. Karena ia bercerita tentang dongeng-dongeng sebelum tidur, Ayah yang sehangat matahari, dan anak lelaki yang mencintai air namun harus rela meninggalkannya. Ia juga bercerita tentang sahabat yang pergi, seorang anak perempuan yang selalu merasa ia tidak fit in dalam dunianya, dan keluarga hangat yang tiba-tiba harus terpecah.

Naskah ini sedang diproses oleh Gagas Media dan kabarnya mungkin akan terbit di bulan September 2014. Let's wait and see, semoga semuanya lancar dan saya akan posting berbagai tidbits tentang naskah ini begitu sudah dapat update ya :-)

Sejauh ini, Happily Ever After adalah salah satu naskah yang tak sabar saya nantikan agar segera terbit. I'm really loving Eli and Lulu, kedua karakter utamanya, dan pertemuan mereka yang aneh.

Tentang Film Remember When

Belakangan ini saya sering memposting foto-foto behind the scene Remember When di Facebook dan Instagram. Ya, film Remember When memang sudah memasuki tahap post-production, alias syuting telah selesai dilakukan, dan sekarang sedang memproses poster film serta trailer, juga menyiapkan tanggal rilis layar lebar.

Kabar terbaru dari Rapi Film selaku production house adalah bahwa kemungkinan besar film akan tayang di bulan September 2014. Memang ada sedikit kemunduran, karena satu dan lain hal. Saya percaya, sedikit kemunduran jika berarti ada cukup ruang untuk lebih memaksimalkan segalanya adalah hal yang baik. Setuju?

Untuk trailer dan poster akan segera diposting di akun @FilmRWhen di Twitter jika sudah ada. Ya, novel kover film akan dicetak ulang oleh Gagas Media. Jika ada teman-teman yang kehabisan novel versi lamanya di toko buku, bisa mencoba toko buku online seperti www.bukabuku.com. Mari membaca novelnya sebelum filmnya rilis :-)

Untuk kesamaan film dengan novelnya, sejauh dari naskah revisi kelima yang sudah saya baca, kurang lebih 80% isi novel akan ada dalam filmnya, walaupun memang tidak semua adegan bisa masuk film, dan sebaliknya, tidak semua adegan di film akan sama persis dengan bukunya. Akan ada perubahan. Akan ada give and take. Akan ada kompromi. Semuanya demi optimalnya film tersebut, karena medianya berbeda antara film dengan buku.

Dari sejauh yang saya ketahui, akan ada perubahan adegan ending. Akan ada setting di luar negeri, seperti foto-foto BTS yang sudah beredar di Twitter. Akan ada sedikit kejutan. Sejauh apa kejutan itu, kita akan tahu saat menyaksikan filmnya.

Sama seperti sebelumnya, dalam film ini saya tidak terlibat 100% dalam casting, syuting, maupun produksi. Seperti pembaca dan calon penonton, saya pun punya harapan dan ekspektasi besar terhadap film Remember When. Saya pun tahu, akan ada yang berbahagia, juga akan ada yang kecewa dengan berbagai aspek selama perjalanan adaptasi buku menjadi film. Saya juga percaya, saat novel diadaptasi menjadi media lain, salah satu pihak yang paling deg-degan dan khawatir adalah penulisnya :-) pertama kali menonton filmnya, pertama kali mendengar kabar tentang pemainnya, dan lain sebagainya, merupakan sensasi sendiri. You might love it. You might not. Saya belum tahu.

Di luar itu semua, mari kita sama-sama menantikan film Remember When. Saya yakin setiap orang punya ekspekstasi tersendiri terhadapnya, dan saya menghargai itu, terlebih lagi amat senang dengan respons teman-teman semua. We all wish it to be good - even better than the book. I do, and I know you do too. Terima kasih banyak untuk semua dukungan teman-teman sekalian.

Tentang Tomodachi

Halo semua, lama tak meng-update blog dengan posting seputar tulis-menulis, maka saya akan cerita sedikit tentang beberapa proyek yang tengah berlangsung maupun yang baru terbit.

Pertama, tentang Tomodachi.

Terima kasih banyak bagi teman-teman sekalian yang sudah membeli novel terbaru saya yang sudah terbit di Gramedia tersebut :-) juga yang sudah ikut PO buku bertanda tangan di toko buku online. Semoga kalian menyukai cerita sederhana tersebut.

Jujur, setelah selesai menulis naskahnya, saya sempat merasa Tomodachi adalah naskah terlemah yang pernah saya tulis, sehingga hampir saja berniat menariknya dan menggantinya dengan naskah lain. Beberapa alasannya sebenarnya cukup sederhana, seperti keterbatasan waktu untuk mengembangkannya karena saat itu sedang mengejar deadline yang sudah saya janjikan kepada penerbit, plot daur ulang yang menyinggung sahabat dan cinta pertama, juga kesederhanaan keseluruhan cerita dan penggunaan settingnya yang sudah pernah digunakan dalam novel sebelumnya.

Namun, ada suatu perasaan yang berbeda saat kembali membacanya sebelum terbit, waktu itu untuk kebutuhan proofreading. Rasanya, naskah yang saya anggap lemah itu justru memiliki kesederhanaan tersendiri yang membuat hati terasa hangat. Setidaknya, itulah yang saya rasakan. Terlepas dari apa pendapat pembaca nantinya, yang dapat saya lakukan hanyalah berharap cerita kecil ini juga dapat menghangatkan hati mereka.

Lalu, selepas terbit ada beberapa resensi dan komentar yang masuk dari media sosial, juga Goodreads. Saya sangat terharu ketika melihat bahwa cerita Tomomi, Tomoki, dan kawan-kawannya dapat menyenangkan pembaca. Bahkan ada seorang pembaca yang mengaku terinspirasi oleh cerita di Tomodachi, membuatnya ingin melanjutkan kuliah dan mengejar mimpi. Sungguh, itu sesuatu yang sangat 'sesuatu' buat saya.

Beberapa pembaca juga menyebutkan manga - bahwa membaca Tomodachi terasa seperti membaca manga atau komik Jepang dalam kata-kata. Saya pun amat tersanjung, apalagi ketika ada yang memunculkan judul Kimi ni Todoke dan Friends sebagai contoh manga yang menurut mereka mirip auranya dengan Tomodachi.

Saat menulis naskahnya, manga-manga tersebutlah yang menjadi inspirasi terbesar. Saat membaca karya Karuho Shina, Hiromi Mashiba, Yuu Ito, seringkali saya terharu dan kagum pada kemampuan mangaka hebat tersebut dalam menciptakan kisah yang tampak ringan, tetapi sebenarnya kompleks emosi. Karakter-karakternya hidup, dan saling melengkapi. Itulah esensi yang saya tangkap dan ingin saya potret lewat Tomodachi. Jadi, mengetahui bahwa pembaca merasakannya merupakan salah satu komentar terbaik yang pernah saya harapkan.

Mungkin banyak yang tidak menyukai fakta bahwa lagi-lagi saya menulis seputar friend-zone. Dalam cerita ini, saya meminta para pembaca untuk memakluminya sekali lagi :-) karena begitu banyak cerita tentang Tomomi dan Tomoki yang ingin saya sampaikan.

Dan saya berjanji, untuk dua naskah novel selanjutnya, yang akan saya update beritanya di blog ini, tidak memuat seputar friend-zone dan cinta segitiga. Setidaknya, kedua karakter utamanya bukanlah sahabat sejak kecil yang lalu jatuh cinta kepada satu sama lain. Sebaliknya, mereka adalah dua orang yang jauh berbeda, bertemu karena sebuah kesempatan, dan kemudian tertarik kepada satu sama lain karena berbagai hal yang ada dalam hidup mereka.

Review

I love the fact that the book is not simply a cookbook - it's filled with beautiful illustrations, and information about the Chinese history as well as ancestry traditions. It doesn't hurt that it has some easy to follow recipes as well. I like the author's writing voice, it's eloquent but not overly friendly, and it creates a nice distance to readers.

I even plan to carry out some experiments with the recipe :-)

(book) Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Synopsis

Two misfits.

One extraordinary love.

Eleanor... Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough...Eleanor.

Park... He knows she'll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There's a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises...Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.

Review

I was delaying reading this book for two reasons:

1. I would love to like it as much as the reviews, and I'm afraid I won't. I like Fangirl and I have high expectations for this one.

2. The setting and time frame of 1986 daunts me a little. I love the eighties but am not sure about reading a book about the 80s.

I was proven wrong for both counts.

First off, this reads like a fresh contemporary YA romance. True, it's got the cliches of star-crossed lovers who might not even be in each other's radar if not for this so-called thing called fate, and it's got the classic set-up of youthful love. It even gets as far as mentioning Romeo and Juliet. But then, it's about first loves, and the theme never gets old as long as the execution is new. And what can I say, the execution is splendid.

I like the first chapters, they create a setting for both characters to meet perfectly. I find the middle parts floundering, but the last couple of chapters feel so heartbreaking and raw I just can't read fast enough.

Both characters are not your typical jock/cheerleader/popular people/total outcasts/spunky teen either. Eleanor might look like a spunky outcast on the outside but I love that she's got insecurities. Park is not your next door hunk either - he's Asian and in a town when he's the only one who looks it, apart from his Mom, he's got his own problems and perspective for popularity.

Their romance feels right. I don't need to be told it is, because I feel it. I feel like feeling that fluttery butterflies in my stomach again because I'm reading about their romance. It feels authentic, and I think that's what Rainbow Rowell excels in most - that, and dialogue. She can create amazing chemistry whenever she writes.

The ending feels a bit sad, but I guess bittersweet in some ways. I like it as much as I do Fangirl, but then if I'm asked to compare between the two, I can't because they're two different things, and they're both charming books.

So while I won't rave about Eleanor and Park that much, I do feel I'll read it again from time to time, and fall in love with them all over again, quietly. Because it's that kind of book - a slice of life, nothing much might be going on with the plot until the last parts, but these are the parts of life that mean the most.

(animation) The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki

I become a big fan of Japanese animation films ever since I watched 5 CM per Second by Makoto Shinkai. Since then I collected all Studio Ghibli films and grew to love them for their beauty and simplicity.

To me the works of Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Makoto Shinkai are very characteristic - the style of the drawing is easily distinctive as Japanese, as in you know it when you see it. Most of the time, the stories are often laced with fantasy or stories of dreams and youth. Even though some of the films I've watched fall into the fantasy genre or contain absurd themes that might be difficult to relate to or even understand, essentially they fit the genre 'slice of life best'. The Wind Rises is such an example; for me it's a powerful film about courage, dreams, and love.

Some might raise controversy that this is an anti-war film, or even one that is pro-Japanese war because of the theme and the main character, Jiro, who is an airplane engineer. It is loosely based on the life story of a living person by the same name; of how Jiro grew up unable to become a pilot due to his nearsightedness and in the end dreamed of building planes instead. His planes were later used in war against many countries, and created destruction. Because it is highly fictionalized, there is an element of bittersweet romance in it, and a fantasy sequence that involves dreams of meeting Carponi, an Italian plane engineer.

In spite of those, I believe that the film is not simply about war. It shows the power of dreams, that one must live life to the fullest by going after their dreams. It is also about the strength of one's love to overcome adversity, even though it might be a difficult journey to endure. I like the characters - they are layered with depth and are very strong, characteristics of a Ghibli film as I've found this in other Miyazaki films as well. The pace is rather slow and I find myself wishing it's cut shorter and can do without some scenes, but overall the effect is a bittersweet film that renders you silent long after you finish watching it.

The soundtrack is lovely as usual, it has a tinge of melancholy in the lyrics as well as the melody, and it sounds a little old fashioned, aptly fitting the film.

While The Wind Rises is not my favorite Hayao Miyazaki film, I believe it is worth watching and since it's his final film, I'm going to appreciate it even more.

(manga) Youth Strategy Guide by Sorata Akizuki

Sebenarnya nggak terlalu tertarik dengan sinopsisnya, namun karena suka gambarnya dan judulnya sepertinya menarik, akhirnya jadi memasukkan komik ini ke daftar belanjaan. Dan ternyata, setelah membacanya, ceritanya sangat menarik. Slice of life, my favorite genre, tapi isinya benar-benar mencerminkan kehidupan sekolah dan remaja laki-laki, terutama settingnya yang di sekolah khusus pria juga sangat mendukung cerita.

Dari keempat karakter, awalnya berpikir ini akan jadi cerita Ise dan Kurata saja, tapi dengan perkenalan Nogami dan Ueyama, ternyata keempat karakter sentral ini punya side stories masing-masing.

Dari awal persahabatan di permulaan kelas dua SMA sampai kelulusan, cerita mereka mampu memotret kekhawatiran remaja pada masa depan, kisah cinta, sampai persahabatan. Very recommended. Gambarnya juga bagus!

A Highly Suggestible Mind

Lately I was made aware that the mind, also everything else, was highly suggestible. Not only that; it perhaps referenced to the fact that everything else was truly connected and affected by one another - this invisible law of the universe that I paid no close heed to until I did.

A few weeks ago I put some dried octopus inside an airtight container full of freshly dried peanuts. The nuts were very dry and crispy, and in contrast the octopus was a little wet, slightly exposed to air for quite some time. When I opened it a week later to eat the octopus, to my surprise it was so crispy I hardly believed it. The same thing happened to a few rice crispies I put inside a box of braised chicken. When I opened the box the crispies were shrivelled next to nothing.

That made me realize that the environment pretty much affected the minor population so that it conformed to the majority. Had the crispies doubled the amount of the chicken, or the octopus was more than the peanuts, the opposite would have happened - the minority would follow the exact condition of the majority.

Not everything could be defined this way, of course. But then it made me think - is everything really that easily suggestible, therefore manipulated?

As with the mind that affects the physical body and often vice versa, as a child's environment helps shape the way he or she grow up, every word and every thing that we've gone through pretty much affects the way we are. Memories, experiences, thoughts, incidents - all of these also shape us into what we're becoming, some unconsciously, some we let happen, and some we build a wall against so they don't get through (but in some ways I believe they do).

A few days ago I was talking to a professional in her area of expertise and she talked me down in a way that I thought was not very respectful. Everyone around me was saying how I should have been angrier than I was, and a highly suggestible mind like mine at that moment was swayed, even though in the end I chose a stand against it. Again, the fact made me think that we could choose to conform or not to, but then the environment around us will affect us to the extent that we allow it to.

Just musings I never really thought about and put into words now. Not sure if it makes sense now that I'm writing about it, but hey :-) a mind is indeed suggestible!
