When I received and unpacked the package from Bookdepository and glimpsed the book inside, I was happily chanting, "Mara Dyer, Mara Dyer." So great was my enthusiasm that I preordered it as soon as it was available and dived straight into it as soon as it arrived.
I read it without expectations, because even though I remember how much I loved the first book and the characters, I don't remember much of the story since it's been at least a year since I last read about them. However, this book is a worthy sequel and much more.
It's definitely exciting, and a lot creepier than I remember. There are spine tingling moments that get me nightmares the night I finish reading the book. The characters are all so strong they make me root for them, and yay I am happy Jamie is making a comeback in this book. I also love intelligent characters, and while some might argue that Mara is constantly a damsel in distress, I disagree. I cannot imagine what she is going through, and the way she's holding herself together and the way she thinks as well as acts in difficult situations is amazing.
Then Noah Shaw. Noah is the only male character in fiction that I simply love to bits, flaws and all. He seems perfect even though we know he's not, and as always I love the smart dialogue. Michelle Hodkin's clear and uncomplicated prose carries the story forward in a perfect pace, and the dialogue keeps the story alive. The thrill is often so good it's unbearable, and the mystery is perfectly veiled as to not give us too much spoilers but also keeps us guessing.
The cover is so pretty. The first book has greenish hue, this one has a bluish tone. I'm pretty sure the third one will have a reddish color :) and the cover is unbelievably soft, like velvet, with this distinct font that sets off the rest of the book.
So much love for this book. Now I need to wait a year till the third and final book is released.
